About Us
The Heads of the Valley Sub Aqua Club is a branch No. 263 of the British Sub Aqua Club. It was established in 1964 when scuba diving was in its infancy. Currently, the club has approximately 70 members.
The range of members have a spread of all ages and experience ranging from new trainees to First Class Divers and instructors ranging from Assistant grade right up to National Instructor level. We also have divers trained by several different agencies as members.
Although we don't own a club house we meet in Ebbw Vale Leisure Centre every Thursday where we have the use of its 30m long / 4m deep pool for training for 1 hour and then meet in the bar afterwards where people stay for the rest of the evening. The various conference rooms in the building are also used as classrooms for the theory side of dive training.
The club owns 2 RIBs (Rigid Inflatable Boats), a 6m Humber and 5.5m Sea rider.
Both of these are based near Milford Haven in West Wales and as a result most of the diving is in that area. This means we have fast easy access to the many wrecks around the West Wales coast in addition to the islands of Skokholm, Skomer, the marine reserve and when the weather cooperates, "The Smalls".
Both these boats are fitted with VHF radios, satellite navigation, echo sounders and other equipment. In addition to that the club owns several sets of Oxygen first aid equipment.
Most weekends when the weather permits we're diving off one or both or these boats in that area.
In addition to West Wales, the club also organises various trips around the UK (Cornwall,Plymouth,Weymouth etc) on charter boats and also runs occasional trips abroad (Red Sea, Spain in 2007 and so on).
Failing that its not abnormal when the weather is poor to find some of us in the National Diving and Activity Centre (Chepstow for short) practicing.
In short, there are usually some people diving somewhere most weekends!
As well as going diving we also have a training structure in branch to advance people up through the grades while at the same time enjoying diving.
When not diving we're not unknown to have social events such as barbeques and so on.
We're an amateur club and as part of the BSAC system means we aren't out to make a profit - the money collected is there to cover costs and expenses.
Membership of the club currently costs £8 per month.
Use of the pool costs £2.50 per week (£1 children).
Diving off the club RIBs in general is charged at £15 per day (regardless of number of dives) and £12 for each subsequent day.
